Crowns, inlays & onlays
Crowns, Inlays, and Onlays are called indirect restorations. When a molar or a premolar is too damaged and has lost too much tooth structure to support a filling, one of the above restorations is needed to restore the tooth.
After preparation, an impression is taken, or the tooth gets scanned. The laboratory then makes the appropriate restoration and it will get cemented or bonded to the tooth. Why a tooth is selected for an Inlay, Onlay or a Crown depends on the amount of tooth structure that is lost. Crowns, Inlays, and Onlays can be made of gold, Porcelain, Zirconia or Lithium Disilicate among other materials.
